Montgomery County is one of the 82 county of Mississippi, located towards the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. It is home to over 12189 people (2000 census). As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 11266, giving it the 15th smallest population among Mississippi's county. The county has a total area of 407.86 square miles (1056.35 kmē), of which, 406.85 square miles (1053.74 kmē) of it is land and 1.02 square miles (2.64 kmē) of it is water, makes it the fourth smallest by total area in Mississippi.

As of the census of 2000, there were 12189 people in the county, organized into 4690 households, and 3369 families residing in the county. The population density was 30 people per square mile (11.58/kmē), it is Mississippi's 55th most densely populated county. There were 5402 housing units at an average density of 13.3 per square mile (5.14/kmē). The average household size was 2.57 people, and the average family size was 3.1 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 26.8% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 115.7 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 123.3 females. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 11266, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 6023 White, 5144 Black or African American, 12 American Indian, 34 Asian, 3 Native Hawaiian, and 50 from two or more races.
