Montgomery County is a county in the United States of Illinois. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 30652 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 29773, It is the 51st most populous county in the U.S. state of Illinois. The county extends throughout a territory of 709.75 sq mi (1838.24 sq km ), of which, 703.8 square miles (1822.83 sq km) of it is land and 5.96 square miles (15.44 sq km) of it is water, it is the 26th largest by area in the U.S. state of Illinois.

As of the census of 2000, there were 30652 residents, 11507 households, and 7927 families in the county. The population density was 43.6 people per square mile (16.83/kmē), giving it the 58th most densely populated county among the Illinois. There were 12525 housing units at an average density of 17.8 per square mile (6.87/kmē). The average household size was 2.44 persons, and the average family size was 2.97 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 17% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 94 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 94 females. The July 2008 population estimate is 29773, The racial makeup of the county was 94.83% White, 4.07% Black or African American, 0.25% American Indian, 0.25% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 0.57% from two or more races.
