The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 224810, making it the fourth most populous county in Alabama. The county comprises an area of 799.76 sq mi (2071.37 sq km), of which, 789.76 square miles (2045.47 sq km) of it is land and 9.99 square miles (25.87 sq km) of it is water, it is the 22nd largest in terms of geographical size.

In the county Population was distributed with 25.8% under the age of 18, 11.7% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 11.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 90.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.7 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 224810, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 43.5% White, 53.84% Black or African American, 0.28% American Indian, 1.29% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, and 1.04% from two or more races.
