The city's estimated population as of July 2008 was 202696, It is second most populous in Alabama. The city comprises an area of 156.19 square miles (404.53 kmē), of which, 155.38 square miles (402.43 kmē) of it is land and 0.81 square miles (2.1 kmē) of it is water, makes it the fourth largest by total area in Alabama.
