Monterey County is a county located in California, in the Western Region (Pacific) of United States. In 2000, the population was 401762. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 408238, giving it the 19th largest population among California's county. The county comprises an area of 3771.07 sq mi (9767.03 sq km), of which, 3321.95 square miles (8603.81 sq km) of it is land and 449.12 square miles (1163.22 sq km) of it is water, it is the 17th largest by area in the U.S. state of California. It is ranks fourth in the size of its inland waterways in California.

The population density was 120.9 people per square mile (46.68/kmē), it is 25th most densely populated county in California. There were 131708 housing units at an average density of 39.6 per square mile (15.29/kmē). The average household size was 3.14 persons, and the average family size was 3.65 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 28.4% under the age of 18, 10.9% from 18 to 24, 31.4% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 10% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 107.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 107.7 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 408238, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 348444 White, 14590 Black or African American, 5616 American Indian, 26061 Asian, 2234 Native Hawaiian, and 11293 from two or more races.
