Montana is a one of the state, located in Western Region (Mountain) of United States. It is home to over 902195 people (2000 census). Its population was estimated at 967440 in July 2008, making it the seventh least populous in United States. The state comprises an area of 147042.4 mi˛ (380838.07 square kilometre), of which, 145552.43 square miles (376979.06 square kilometre) of it is land and 1489.96 square miles (3858.98 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the fourth largest in terms of geographical size.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 902195 people, 358667 households, and 237407 families residing in the state. The population density was 6.2 people per square mile (2.39/km˛), it is United States's third least densely populated state. There were 412633 housing units at an average density of 2.8 per square mile (1.08/km˛). The average household size was 2.45 persons, and the average family size was 2.99 persons. In the state the population was spread out, with 25.5% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 99.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.2 males. The median age was 37.5 years, The median age of males was 36.6 years, for females the median age was 38.5 years. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the state is 902195, The racial or ethnic makeup of the state was 90.58% White, 0.3% Black or African American, 6.21% American Indian, 0.52% Asian, 0.05% Native Hawaiian, 1.74% from two or more races and 0.59% Other races.
