Monroe County is a county located in Wisconsin, in the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 40899 inhabitants. Its population was estimated at 43350 in July 2008, It is the 33rd most populous county in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The county comprises an area of 908.29 mi˛ (2352.46 sq km), of which, 900.77 square miles (2332.98 sq km) of it is land and 7.52 square miles (19.48 sq km) of it is water, it is the 28th largest in terms of geographical size.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 40899 people, 15399 households, and 10790 families living in the county. The population density was 45.4 people per square mile (17.53/km˛), making it the 37th most densely populated county in Wisconsin. There were 16672 housing units at an average density of 18.5 per square mile (7.14/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.6 persons, and the average family size was 3.11 persons. Age range in the county was well distributed with 28.1% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 101.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.6 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 43350, The racial makeup of the county was 41799 White, 442 Black or African American, 470 American Indian, 222 Asian, 18 Native Hawaiian, and 399 from two or more races.
