Monroe County is one of the 55 county of West Virginia, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 14583 inhabitants. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 13739, giving it the 16th smallest population among West Virginia's county. The county encompasses an area of 473.66 sq mi (1226.77 square kilometre ), of which, 473.37 square miles (1226.02 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.78 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 20th largest in terms of geographical size.

The population density was 30.8 people per square mile (11.89/kmē), making its West Virginia's 15th least densely populated county. There were 7267 housing units at an average density of 15.4 per square mile (5.95/kmē). The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.88. In the county Population was distributed with 20.1% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 26.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 79.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 73.8 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 13739, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 97.63% White, 1.11% Black or African American, 0.18% American Indian, 0.12% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.95% from two or more races.
