Monroe County is a county located in the United States of Pennsylvania. In 2000, county's population was 138687 inhabitants. Its population was estimated at 165058 in July 2008, making it the 21st most populous county in Pennsylvania. It covers total area of 617.42 sq mi (1599.11 square kilometre), of which, 608.5 square miles (1576.01 square kilometre) of it is land and 8.92 square miles (23.1 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 37th largest by size in Pennsylvania.

As of the census of 2000, there were 138687 people, 49454 households, and 36459 families residing in the county. The population density was 227.9 people per square mile (87.99/kmē), making its Pennsylvania's 23rd most densely populated county. There were 67581 housing units at an average density of 111.1 per square mile (42.9/kmē). The average household size was 2.73 persons, and the average family size was 3.16 persons. Age range in the county was well distributed with 26.8% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.4 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 165058, The racial makeup of the county was 84.27% White, 11.62% Black or African American, 0.3% American Indian, 2.21% Asian, 0.05% Native Hawaiian, and 1.56% from two or more races.
