Monroe County is a United States county located in the United States of New York. In 2000, the population was 735343. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 732762, making it the ninth most populous county in New York. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1365.61 square miles (3536.91 sq km), of which, 659.29 square miles (1707.55 sq km) of it is land and 706.31 square miles (1829.33 sq km) of it is water, it is the 12th largest by area in the U.S. state of New York. It is ranks third in the size of its inland waterways in New York.

As of the census of 2000, there were 735343 people, 286512 households, and 184479 families living in the county. The population density was 1115.3 people per square mile (430.62/kmē), it is the tenth most populated county in terms of population density. There were 304388 housing units at an average density of 461.7 per square mile (178.26/kmē). The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.08. In the Monroe County, 25.6% of the population was under the age of 18, 9.5% were 18 to 24, 29.3% were 25 to 44, 22.6% were 45 to 64, and 13% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.2 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 732762, The racial makeup of the county was 589634 White, 108094 Black or African American, 2291 American Indian, 20387 Asian, 372 Native Hawaiian, and 11984 from two or more races.
