Monroe County is a one of the county from Missouri's 115 counties and independent city, located in Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. The county has a population of 9311 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 9127, It is Missouri's 22nd least populous county. It covers total area of 670.23 square miles (1735.89 kmē), of which, 645.98 square miles (1673.08 kmē) of it is land and 24.24 square miles (62.78 kmē) of it is water, making it the 40th largest by size in Missouri. It is ranks seventh in the size of its inland waterways in Missouri.

As of the census of 2000, there were 9311 people in the county, organized into 3656 households, and 2567 families living in the county. The population density was 14.4 people per square mile (5.56/kmē), it is Missouri's 21st least densely populated county. There were 4565 housing units at an average density of 7.1 per square mile (2.74/kmē). The average household size was 2.5 and the average family size was 3.02. The population's age distribution was 25.9% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 25% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.1 males. Its population was estimated at 9127 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 8600 White, 372 Black or African American, 44 American Indian, 21 Asian, 3 Native Hawaiian, and 87 from two or more races.
