Monroe County is one of the 82 county of Mississippi, located towards the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. In 2000, the population was 38014. In July 2008, its estimated population was 37250, It is the 20th largest in terms of population. The county spans an area of 772.04 square miles (1999.57 sq km), of which, 764.17 square miles (1979.19 sq km) of it is land and 7.87 square miles (20.38 sq km) of it is water, makes it the tenth largest by total area in Mississippi.

The population density was 49.7 people per square mile (19.19/kmē), it is 33rd most densely populated county in Mississippi. There were 16236 housing units at an average density of 21.2 per square mile (8.19/kmē). The average household size was 2.57 people, and the average family size was 3.07 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 14% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 111.5 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 118.1 females. In July 2008, its estimated population was 37250, The racial makeup of the county was 25483 White, 11457 Black or African American, 39 American Indian, 72 Asian, 2 Native Hawaiian, and 197 from two or more races.
