Monroe County is one of the 120 county of Kentucky, located towards the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. Monroe County had an official population of 11756 in 2000. In July 2008, its estimated population was 11547, It is the 25th smallest in terms of population. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 332.11 sq mi (860.16 square kilometre), of which, 330.81 square miles (856.79 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.3 square miles (3.37 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the 58th largest by total area in Kentucky.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 11756 people, 4741 households, and 3380 families living in the county. The population density was 35.5 people per square mile (13.71/kmē), it is the 23rd least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Kentucky. There were 5288 housing units at an average density of 16 per square mile (6.18/kmē). The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.94. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 23.9% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 11547, The racial makeup of the county was 11093 White, 329 Black or African American, 18 American Indian, 19 Asian, 3 Native Hawaiian, and 85 from two or more races.
