Monroe County is a county located in Iowa, in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. The county has a population of 8016 as per the 2000 census data. Its population was estimated at 7577 in July 2008, It is Iowa's 11th least populous county. Its area is just over 434.11 sq mi (1124.34 square kilometre), of which, 433.41 square miles (1122.53 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.7 square miles (1.81 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 13th smallest by size in Iowa.

The population's age distribution was 25.3% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25% from 25 to 44, 23% from 45 to 64, and 19.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.6 males. Its population was estimated at 7577 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 7445 White, 17 Black or African American, 31 American Indian, 31 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 53 from two or more races.
