As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 32804, making it Illinois's 46th largest county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 397.71 mi˛ (1030.06 square kilometre), of which, 388.29 square miles (1005.67 square kilometre) of it is land and 9.42 square miles (24.4 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 28th smallest by area in the U.S. state of Illinois.

As of July 2008, the estimated population was 32804, The racial makeup of the county was 32166 White, 289 Black or African American, 56 American Indian, 120 Asian, 3 Native Hawaiian, and 170 from two or more races.
