Monroe County, Florida is a county located in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. It is home to over 79589 people (2000 census). Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 72243, It is Florida's 38th most populous county. The county comprises an area of 3737.15 square miles (9679.17 sq km), of which, 996.91 square miles (2581.99 sq km) of it is land and 2740.24 square miles (7097.19 sq km) of it is water, it is the largest by area in the U.S. state of Florida. It is ranks first in the size of its inland waterways in Florida.

As of the census of 2000, there were 79589 people, 35086 households, and 20387 families residing in the county. The population density was 79.8 people per square mile (30.81/kmē), it would be the 41st most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Florida. There were 51617 housing units at an average density of 51.8 per square mile (20/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.23 persons, and the average family size was 2.73 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 17.1% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 31.1% from 25 to 44, 30.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 113.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 114.8 males. Its population was estimated at 72243 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 66181 White, 3890 Black or African American, 357 American Indian, 906 Asian, 37 Native Hawaiian, and 872 from two or more races.
