Monroe County, Alabama is a county located in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Monroe County is home to 24324 inhabitants. The July 2008 population estimate is 22553, making it the 45th most populous county in Alabama. The county encompasses an area of 1034.53 sq mi (2679.42 kmē ), of which, 1025.85 square miles (2656.94 kmē) of it is land and 8.67 square miles (22.46 kmē) of it is water, it is the ninth largest by area in the U.S. state of Alabama.

The population density was 23.7 people per square mile (9.15/kmē), making its Alabama's 15th least densely populated county. In the county the population was spread out, with 28.3% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 90.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.4 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 22553, The racial makeup of the county was 12851 White, 9173 Black or African American, 250 American Indian, 69 Asian, 3 Native Hawaiian, and 207 from two or more races.
