Monongalia County is a county located in the United States of West Virginia. The population of the county was 81866 as per the 2000 census data. Its population was estimated at 88221 in July 2008, giving it the fourth largest population among West Virginia's county. The county comprises an area of 365.89 mi˛ (947.65 sq km), of which, 361.16 square miles (935.4 sq km) of it is land and 4.73 square miles (12.25 sq km) of it is water, makes it the 33rd largest by total area in West Virginia.

As of the census of 2000, there were 81866 people in the county, organized into 33446 households, and 18504 families residing in the county. The population density was 226.7 people per square mile (87.53/km˛), making its West Virginia's seventh most densely populated county. There were 36695 housing units at an average density of 101.6 per square mile (39.23/km˛). The average household size was 2.28 people, and the average family size was 2.91 people. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 18.2% under the age of 18, 23.4% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 20% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 101.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.2 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 88221, The racial makeup of the county was 81392 White, 3435 Black or African American, 179 American Indian, 2031 Asian, 46 Native Hawaiian, and 1138 from two or more races.
