Monona County, Iowa is a county of the United States of Iowa. As of 2000 the population was 10020. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 8966, making it the 16th least populous county in Iowa. The county comprises an area of 698.85 square miles (1810.01 kmē), of which, 693.12 square miles (1795.17 kmē) of it is land and 5.73 square miles (14.84 kmē) of it is water, it is the 16th largest by area in the U.S. state of Iowa.

As of the census of 2000, there were 10020 residents, 4211 households, and 2738 families in the county. The population density was 14.5 people per square mile (5.6/kmē), it is the sixth least populated county in terms of population density. There were 4660 housing units at an average density of 6.7 per square mile (2.59/kmē). The average household size was 2.31 people, and the average family size was 2.88 people. In the Monona County, 23.2% of the population was under the age of 18, 6.2% were 18 to 24, 23.3% were 25 to 44, 23.3% were 45 to 64, and 23.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.5 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 8966, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 8780 White, 18 Black or African American, 88 American Indian, 16 Asian, 3 Native Hawaiian, and 61 from two or more races.
