Modoc County is one of the 58 county of California, located towards the Western Region (Pacific) of United States. The population of the county was 9449 as per the 2000 census data. Its population was estimated at 9184 in July 2008, making it California's third smallest county. It covers total area of 4203.37 square miles (10886.68 square kilometre), of which, 3944.1 square miles (10215.17 square kilometre) of it is land and 259.28 square miles (671.53 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 12th largest by size in California.

As of the census of 2000, there were 9449 people in the county, organized into 3784 households, and 2551 families living in the county. The population density was 2.4 people per square mile (0.93/kmē), it would be the third least densely populated county in the U.S. state of California. There were 4807 housing units at an average density of 1.2 per square mile (0.46/kmē). The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.91. In the Modoc County, 25.6% of the population was under the age of 18, 5.7% were 18 to 24, 23.3% were 25 to 44, 27.7% were 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 102.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.7 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 9184, The racial makeup of the county was 91.18% White, 0.94% Black or African American, 4.7% American Indian, 0.66% Asian, 0.1% Native Hawaiian, and 2.42% from two or more races.
