Mitchell County, North Carolina is a county located in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. In 2000, county's population was 15687 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 15784, giving it the 14th smallest population among North Carolina's county. It covers total area of 222.14 miē (575.34 kmē), of which, 221.43 square miles (573.5 kmē) of it is land and 0.71 square miles (1.84 kmē) of it is water, making it North Carolina's second smallest county by total area.
