As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 6932 inhabitants. In July 2008, its estimated population was 6292, It is Kansas's 56th most populous county. Its area is just over 718.62 square miles (1861.22 kmē), of which, 699.82 square miles (1812.53 kmē) of it is land and 18.8 square miles (48.69 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 64th largest by total area in Kansas. It is ranks fourth in the size of its inland waterways in Kansas.

As of the census of 2000, there were 6932 people, 2850 households, and 1863 families residing in the county. The population density was 9.9 people per square mile (3.82/kmē), it would be the 52nd most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Kansas. There were 3340 housing units at an average density of 4.8 per square mile (1.85/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.31 persons, and the average family size was 2.91 persons. In the county Age distribution was 24.5% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 22.5% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 21.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 102.7 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 102.5 females. Its population was estimated at 6292 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 96.93% White, 0.91% Black or African American, 0.52% American Indian, 0.48% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 1.13% from two or more races.
