Mississippi County is a county located in Missouri, in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 13427 inhabitants. The July 2008 population estimate is 13504, making it the 73rd most populous county in Missouri. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 428.91 sq mi (1110.87 kmē), of which, 413.16 square miles (1070.08 kmē) of it is land and 15.75 square miles (40.79 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 13th smallest by total area in Missouri.

As of the census of 2000, there were 13427 people in the county, organized into 5383 households, and 3673 families living in the county. The population density was 32.5 people per square mile (12.55/kmē), it is the 53rd most populated county in terms of population density. There were 5840 housing units at an average density of 14.1 per square mile (5.44/kmē). The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.98. The population's age distribution was 26.3% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 87.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.7 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 13504, The racial makeup of the county was 10485 White, 2776 Black or African American, 46 American Indian, 70 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, and 126 from two or more races.
