Mississippi is a state of the United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 2844658 inhabitants. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 2938618, It is United States's 31st largest by population . The state spans an area of 48430.19 sq mi (125433.62 sq km), of which, 46906.96 square miles (121488.47 sq km) of it is land and 1523.24 square miles (3945.17 sq km) of it is water, it is the 32nd largest by area in the U.S. state of America.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2844658 people in the state, organized into 1046434 households, and 747159 families living in the state. The population density was 60.6 people per square mile (23.4/kmē), it is the 32nd most populated state in terms of population density. There were 1161953 housing units at an average density of 24.8 per square mile (9.58/kmē). The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.14. In the state the population was spread out, with 27.3% under the age of 18, 10.9% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 107.1 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 111.6 females. The median age was 33.8 years, the median age of male residents at 32.2 and the median age of female residents at 35.3. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 2844658, The racial or ethnic makeup of the state was 61.38% White, 36.34% Black or African American, 0.41% American Indian, 0.65% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, 0.7% from two or more races and 0.48% Other races.
