In the state the population was spread out, with 27.3% under the age of 18, 10.9% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 107.1 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 111.6 females. The median age was 33.8 years, the median age of male residents at 32.2 and the median age of female residents at 35.3. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 2844658, The racial or ethnic makeup of the state was 61.38% White, 36.34% Black or African American, 0.41% American Indian, 0.65% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, 0.7% from two or more races and 0.48% Other races.
