The population of county in 2000 stood at 148281 as per the Census data. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 179180, It is the most populous county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. The county comprises an area of 813.69 square miles (2107.45 square kilometre), of which, 809.67 square miles (2097.04 square kilometre) of it is land and 4.01 square miles (10.39 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 40th largest by area in the U.S. state of South Dakota.

As of the census of 2000, there were 148281 people, 57996 households, and 37573 families residing in the county. The population density was 183.1 people per square mile (70.7/kmē), making its South Dakota's most densely populated county. There were 60237 housing units at an average density of 74.4 per square mile (28.73/kmē). The average household size was 2.46 people, and the average family size was 3.04 people. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 26.2% under the age of 18, 10.8% from 18 to 24, 32% from 25 to 44, 20% from 45 to 64, and 11% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.4 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 179180, The racial makeup of the county was 165616 White, 4882 Black or African American, 4194 American Indian, 1874 Asian, 182 Native Hawaiian, and 2432 from two or more races.
