The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 1482478, making it the most populous county in Massachusetts. It is spread over 847.54 sq mi (2195.12 sq km), of which, 823.46 square miles (2132.75 sq km ) of it is land and 24.08 square miles (62.37 sq km) of it is water, it is the fifth largest by area in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. It is ranks tenth in the size of its inland waterways in Massachusetts.

The population density was 1779.6 people per square mile (687.11/kmē), it would be the second most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. There were 576681 housing units at an average density of 700.3 per square mile (270.39/kmē). The average household size was 2.52 persons, and the average family size was 3.11 persons. In the county Population was distributed with 22.5% under the age of 18, 9% from 18 to 24, 33.4% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.7 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 1482478, The racial makeup of the county was 85.45% White, 4.28% Black or African American, 0.22% American Indian, 8.59% Asian, 0.06% Native Hawaiian, and 1.39% from two or more races.
