Metropolis City is a city located in Massac County, Illinois, in the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. Metropolis City had an official population of 6482 in 2000. The city's estimated population as of July 2008 was 6540, It is 271st most populous in Illinois. The city encompasses an area of 5.07 square miles (13.13 sq km ), of which, 5.01 square miles (12.98 sq km) of it is land and 0.06 square miles (0.16 sq km) of it is water, it is the 218th largest by area in the U.S. state of Illinois.

The population density was 1295.1 people per square mile (500.04/kmē), giving it the 627th most densely populated city among the Illinois. For every 100 females there were 79.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 75 males. The median age was 42.6 years, The median age of males was 39.2 years, for females the median age was 46 years. The racial or ethnic makeup of the city was 5868 White, 493 Black or African American, 13 American Indian, 13 Asian, Native Hawaiian, 66 from two or more races and 29 Ohter races.
