Metcalfe County is one of the 120 county of Kentucky, located towards the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. The county has a population of 10037 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 10288, It is the 22nd smallest in terms of population. The county spans an area of 290.96 sq mi (753.58 kmē), of which, 290.9 square miles (753.43 kmē) of it is land and 0.07 square miles (0.18 kmē) of it is water, it is the 69th largest by area in the U.S. state of Kentucky.


As of the census of 2000, there were 10037 people in the county, organized into 4016 households, and 2883 families residing in the county. The population density was 34.5 people per square mile (13.32/kmē), it is the 20th least populated county in terms of population density. There were 4592 housing units at an average density of 15.8 per square mile (6.1/kmē). The average household size was 2.47 people, and the average family size was 2.93 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 24.6% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 15% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 105 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 108 females. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 10288, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 96.96% White, 1.97% Black or African American, 0.22% American Indian, 0.08% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.77% from two or more races.
