Merrick County is a county located in Nebraska, in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. The population of county in 2000 stood at 8204 as per the Census data. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 7700, making it the 38th most populous county in Nebraska. The county encompasses an area of 494.72 sq mi (1281.32 square kilometre ), of which, 484.88 square miles (1255.83 square kilometre) of it is land and 9.85 square miles (25.51 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 17th smallest by area in the U.S. state of Nebraska. It is ranks ninth in the size of its inland waterways in Nebraska.

As of the census of 2000, there were 8204 people, 3209 households, and 2308 families residing in the county. The population density was 16.9 people per square mile (6.53/kmē), it is Nebraska's 29th most densely populated county. There were 3649 housing units at an average density of 7.5 per square mile (2.9/kmē). The average household size was 2.51 people, and the average family size was 2.99 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 27.5% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.9 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 7700, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 7603 White, 18 Black or African American, 23 American Indian, 17 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, and 38 from two or more races.
