Mercer County is a county in the United States of West Virginia. In 2000, the population was 62980. In July 2008, its estimated population was 61500, making it the eighth most populous county in West Virginia. The county spans an area of 420.69 mi˛ (1089.58 square kilometre), of which, 420.43 square miles (1088.91 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.26 square miles (0.67 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 28th largest by size in West Virginia.

As of the census of 2000, there were 62980 people, 26509 households, and 17943 families residing in the county. The population density was 149.8 people per square mile (57.84/km˛), giving it the 12th most densely populated county among the West Virginia. There were 30143 housing units at an average density of 71.7 per square mile (27.68/km˛). The average household size was 2.33 people, and the average family size was 2.85 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 21.1% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 109.8 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 114 females. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 61500, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 92.42% White, 5.87% Black or African American, 0.2% American Indian, 0.51% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 0.98% from two or more races.
