Mercer County is one of the 88 county of Ohio, located towards the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. Mercer County had an official population of 40924 in 2000. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 40818, giving it the 27th smallest population among Ohio's county. The county extends throughout a territory of 473.29 square miles (1225.82 square kilometre ), of which, 463.27 square miles (1199.86 square kilometre) of it is land and 10.03 square miles (25.98 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 37th largest by area in the U.S. state of Ohio.

The population density was 88.3 people per square mile (34.09/kmē), making it the 27th least densely populated county in Ohio. In the county Age distribution was 29.6% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 100.2 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 104 females. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 40818, The racial makeup of the county was 98.2% White, 0.32% Black or African American, 0.29% American Indian, 0.55% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 0.61% from two or more races.
