Mercer County is one of the 115 county of Missouri, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. Mercer County had an official population of 3757 in 2000. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 3523, It is the second smallest county by population in the U.S. state of Missouri. It has total area of 455.18 square miles (1178.91 square kilometre), of which, 454.18 square miles (1176.32 square kilometre) of it is land and 1 square miles (2.59 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Missouri's 21st smallest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 3757 people, 1600 households, and 1089 families living in the county. The population density was 8.3 people per square mile (3.2/kmē), giving it the third least densely populated county among the Missouri. There were 2125 housing units at an average density of 4.7 per square mile (1.81/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.31 persons, and the average family size was 2.83 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 23% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24% from 45 to 64, and 22% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.6 males. Its population was estimated at 3523 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 98.61% White, 0.23% Black or African American, 0.62% American Indian, 0% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 0.51% from two or more races.
