Mercer County is one of the 120 county of Kentucky, located towards the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. Mercer County had an official population of 20817 in 2000. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 21920, It is 53rd most populous county in Kentucky. The county spans an area of 253.11 miē (655.55 kmē), of which, 250.92 square miles (649.88 kmē) of it is land and 2.2 square miles (5.7 kmē) of it is water, it is the 33rd smallest by area in the U.S. state of Kentucky.

The population density was 83 people per square mile (32.05/kmē), it is 40th most densely populated county in Kentucky. There were 9289 housing units at an average density of 37 per square mile (14.29/kmē). The average household size was 2.45 people, and the average family size was 2.93 people. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 24.4% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 21920, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 94.05% White, 3.66% Black or African American, 0.21% American Indian, 1.05% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 1% from two or more races.
