Mercer County is a county located in the United States of Illinois. It is home to over 16957 people (2000 census). Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 16481, It is the 33rd smallest county by population in the U.S. state of Illinois. The county comprises an area of 568.88 miē (1473.39 kmē), of which, 561.02 square miles (1453.04 kmē) of it is land and 7.86 square miles (20.36 kmē) of it is water, making it the 44th largest by size in Illinois.

As of the census of 2000, there were 16957 residents, 6624 households, and 4914 families in the county. The population density was 30.2 people per square mile (11.66/kmē), making its Illinois's 20th least densely populated county. There were 7109 housing units at an average density of 12.7 per square mile (4.9/kmē). The average household size was 2.53 persons, and the average family size was 2.96 persons. In the Mercer County, 24.8% of the population was under the age of 18, 7.3% were 18 to 24, 26.6% were 25 to 44, 25.4% were 45 to 64, and 15.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 16481, The racial makeup of the county was 16152 White, 144 Black or African American, 24 American Indian, 37 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, and 123 from two or more races.
