Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 246117, making it the 26th most populous county in California. The county encompasses an area of 1971.87 sq mi (5107.12 sq km ), of which, 1928.69 square miles (4995.28 sq km) of it is land and 43.18 square miles (111.84 sq km) of it is water, it is the 26th largest by area in the U.S. state of California.
