Menard County is a county located in Illinois, in the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 12486 inhabitants. In July 2008, its estimated population was 12464, It is the 18th smallest county by population in the U.S. state of Illinois. The county encompasses an area of 315.37 sq mi (816.8 sq km ), of which, 314.25 square miles (813.9 sq km) of it is land and 1.13 square miles (2.93 sq km) of it is water, makes it the 13th smallest by total area in Illinois.

As of the census of 2000, there were 12486 people in the county, organized into 4873 households, and 3550 families living in the county. The population density was 39.7 people per square mile (15.33/kmē), making it the 64th most densely populated county in Illinois. There were 5285 housing units at an average density of 16.8 per square mile (6.49/kmē). The average household size was 2.52 persons, and the average family size was 2.99 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 26.5% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 12464, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 98.15% White, 0.95% Black or African American, 0.25% American Indian, 0.18% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.47% from two or more races.
