Mellette County is a United States county located in the United States of South Dakota. As of 2000 the population was 2083. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 1982, making it the seventh least populous county in South Dakota. It covers total area of 1309.75 miē (3392.24 kmē), of which, 1306.49 square miles (3383.79 kmē) of it is land and 3.26 square miles (8.44 kmē) of it is water, making it the 21st largest by size in South Dakota.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2083 people, 694 households, and 499 families living in the county. The population density was 1.6 people per square mile (0.62/kmē), it would be the seventh least densely populated county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. There were 824 housing units at an average density of 0.6 per square mile (0.23/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.94 persons, and the average family size was 3.49 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 35.3% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 101.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.6 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 1982, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 42.13% White, 0.1% Black or African American, 54.54% American Indian, 0.1% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 3.13% from two or more races.
