Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 23989, It is the seventh most populous county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. The county has a total area of 3482.46 mi˛ (9019.53 square kilometre), of which, 3470.63 square miles (8988.89 square kilometre) of it is land and 11.82 square miles (30.61 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the largest in terms of geographical size.

In July 2008, its estimated population was 23989, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 22305 White, 412 Black or African American, 514 American Indian, 186 Asian, 16 Native Hawaiian, and 556 from two or more races.
