Mcpherson County is a county located in South Dakota, in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. The population of the county was 2904 as per the 2000 census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 2480, giving it the 14th smallest population among South Dakota's county. It is spread over 1151.85 mi˛ (2983.28 square kilometre), of which, 1136.94 square miles (2944.66 square kilometre ) of it is land and 14.91 square miles (38.62 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 24th largest by area in the U.S. state of South Dakota.

The population density was 2.6 people per square mile (1/km˛), it would be the 17th least densely populated county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. In the Mcpherson County, 22.2% of the population was under the age of 18, 4.5% were 18 to 24, 20.1% were 25 to 44, 23.6% were 45 to 64, and 29.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.4 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 2480, The racial makeup of the county was 99.31% White, 0% Black or African American, 0.32% American Indian, 0.16% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.2% from two or more races.
