The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 165298, It is Illinois's 13th most populous county. Its area is just over 1186.29 square miles (3072.48 kmē), of which, 1183.53 square miles (3065.33 kmē) of it is land and 2.76 square miles (7.15 kmē) of it is water, giving it the third largest by total area among Illinois's county.
