Mckinley County is a county located in New Mexico, in the Western Region (Mountain) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 74798 inhabitants. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 70724, making it New Mexico's seventh largest county. It covers total area of 5455.22 miē (14128.95 kmē), of which, 5448.72 square miles (14112.12 kmē) of it is land and 6.49 square miles (16.81 kmē) of it is water, it is the seventh largest by area in the U.S. state of New Mexico. It is ranks tenth in the size of its inland waterways in New Mexico.

As of the census of 2000, there were 74798 people in the county, organized into 21476 households, and 16679 families residing in the county. The population density was 13.7 people per square mile (5.29/kmē), it is the ninth most populated county in terms of population density. There were 26718 housing units at an average density of 4.9 per square mile (1.89/kmē). The average household size was 3.44 and the average family size was 3.99. In the county Age distribution was 38% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 17.6% from 45 to 64, and 6.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 70724, The racial makeup of the county was 15290 White, 973 Black or African American, 52399 American Indian, 568 Asian, 103 Native Hawaiian, and 1391 from two or more races.
