The county spans an area of 574.53 square miles (1488.03 kmē), of which, 433.45 square miles (1122.63 kmē) of it is land and 141.08 square miles (365.4 kmē) of it is water, it is the 18th largest by area in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is ranks fourth in the size of its inland waterways in Georgia.

The population density was 25 people per square mile (9.65/kmē), it is 28th least densely populated county in Georgia. There were 5735 housing units at an average density of 13.2 per square mile (5.1/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.54 persons, and the average family size was 3 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 28% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 26.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.9 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 11455, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 7442 White, 3797 Black or African American, 49 American Indian, 40 Asian, 4 Native Hawaiian, and 123 from two or more races.
