According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 5168, making it the 24th most populous county in North Dakota. It has total area of 1911.71 miē (4951.31 kmē), of which, 1874.09 square miles (4853.87 kmē) of it is land and 37.62 square miles (97.44 kmē) of it is water, making it North Dakota's ninth largest county by total area.
