Mchenry City is one of the city of McHenry County, Illinois, located towards the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 21501 inhabitants. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 26862, It is the 99th most populous in the U.S. state of Illinois. The city has a total area of 12.11 mi˛ (31.36 sq km), of which, 11.62 square miles (30.1 sq km) of it is land and 0.49 square miles (1.27 sq km) of it is water, it is the 57th largest by area in the U.S. state of Illinois.

As of the census of 2000, there were 21501 people, 7872 households, and 5560 families living in the city. The population density was 1850.2 people per square mile (714.37/km˛), giving it the 371st most densely populated city among the Illinois. There were 8127 housing units at an average density of 699.4 per square mile (270.04/km˛). The average household size was 2.7 persons, and the average family size was 3.25 persons. In the city the population was distributed as follows: 28.5% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 32.7% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 11% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males. The median age was 34.3 years, The median age of males and females living in Mchenry City was 33 and 35.4 years respectively. The racial makeup of the city was 94.18% White, 0.35% Black or African American, 0.21% American Indian, 0.89% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, 1.02% from two or more races and 3.31% Other races.
