The July 2008 population estimate is 43843, It is North Carolina's 57th most populous county. The county spans an area of 446.41 miē (1156.2 kmē), of which, 441.68 square miles (1143.95 kmē) of it is land and 4.73 square miles (12.25 kmē) of it is water, giving it the 59th largest by total area among North Carolina's county.

For every 100 females there were 99.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.7 males.
