According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 22731, It is the 49th most populous county in the U.S. state of Missouri. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 539.7 square miles (1397.82 square kilometre), of which, 539.51 square miles (1397.32 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.19 square miles (0.49 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 72nd largest by size in Missouri.
