Mccreary County is a United States county located in the United States of Kentucky. As of 2000 the population was 17080. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 17315, giving it the 66th largest population among Kentucky's county. It has total area of 430.64 sq mi (1115.35 kmē), of which, 427.7 square miles (1107.74 kmē) of it is land and 2.94 square miles (7.61 kmē) of it is water, it is the 27th largest in terms of geographical size.

In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 27.7% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.8 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 17315, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 97.4% White, 1.17% Black or African American, 0.46% American Indian, 0.12% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.84% from two or more races.
