Mathews County is a county located in Virginia, in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. The population of county in 2000 stood at 9207 as per the Census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 9038, It is 18th least populous county in Virginia. It covers total area of 251.96 square miles (652.57 square kilometre), of which, 85.68 square miles (221.91 square kilometre) of it is land and 166.28 square miles (430.66 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 84th largest by size in Virginia. It is ranks fourth in the size of its inland waterways in Virginia.

The population density was 107.5 people per square mile (41.51/kmē), it is Virginia's 61st most densely populated county. There were 5333 housing units at an average density of 62.2 per square mile (24.02/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.32 persons, and the average family size was 2.75 persons. Age range in the county was well distributed with 19.9% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 23.1% from 25 to 44, 30.1% from 45 to 64, and 21.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.7 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 9038, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 88.12% White, 10.58% Black or African American, 0.25% American Indian, 0.2% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.85% from two or more races.
