Matawan Borough, Monmouth County, New Jersey is a borough located in the Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. The population of the borough was 8910 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the borough is 8754, giving it the 185th largest population among New Jersey. The borough extends throughout a territory of 2.4 square miles (6.22 kmē ), of which, 2.28 square miles (5.91 kmē) of it is land and 0.12 square miles (0.31 kmē) of it is water, it is the 253rd largest by area in the U.S. state of New Jersey.

As of the census of 2000, there were 8910 people, 457 households, and 284 families residing in the borough. The population density was 3909.1 people per square mile (1509.31/kmē), making it the 167th most densely populated borough in New Jersey. There were 3640 housing units at an average density of 1596.5 per square mile (616.41/kmē). The average household size was 2.52 people, and the average family size was 3.07 people. In the borough the population was spread out, with 22.6% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 36.4% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 102.5 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 104.4 females. The median age was 36.4 years, The median age of males was 35.6 years, for females the median age was 37.2 years. The racial makeup of the borough was 82.35% White, 6.53% Black or African American, 0.02% American Indian, 7.99% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, 1.85% from two or more races and 1.23% Other races.
