According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 25678, It is 25th most populous county in West Virginia. The county encompasses an area of 444.8 mi˛ (1152.03 sq km ), of which, 431.85 square miles (1118.49 sq km) of it is land and 12.95 square miles (33.54 sq km) of it is water, makes it the 24th largest by total area in West Virginia. It is ranks first in the size of its inland waterways in West Virginia.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 25957 people, 10587 households, and 7571 families living in the county. The population density was 60.1 people per square mile (23.2/km˛), it is West Virginia's 24th most densely populated county. There were 12056 housing units at an average density of 27.9 per square mile (10.77/km˛). The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.89. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 22.7% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 26.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.1 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 25678, The racial makeup of the county was 25203 White, 177 Black or African American, 46 American Indian, 67 Asian, 2 Native Hawaiian, and 183 from two or more races.
